The Most Underrated Skill in NYC Real Estate Law? Empathy.

September 23, 2025

When people think about real estate attorneys, they think about sharp contract negotiation, a keen eye for detail, and maybe a bit of tough-nosed strategy. And sure, that’s all true. But there’s one quality that often gets overlooked: empathy.

Every transaction is more than a deal—it’s a life change. A couple buying their first co-op. A family selling the home they raised kids in. An investor navigating the chaos of a new development. If you can’t understand the emotional stakes involved, you can’t serve your client well.

I’ve found that empathy—genuine, active empathy—translates directly to better outcomes. Clients feel heard. Brokers feel supported. Problems get solved, not escalated. And the closing table becomes a celebration, not a stress test.

“Real estate is more than just contracts; it's about the personal and emotional journeys of my clients.”
